Who can benefit from physiotherapy?

There are many conditions and lifestyles that can benefit from physiotherapy for various different reasons. Some of the more common issues I treat are:

  • Hip and elbow dysplasia
  • Cranial cruciate ligament injury
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD)
  • Fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE)
  • Surgeries including total joint replacements, TPLO, Hemilaminectomies, fracture repairs
  • Pre and Post-surgery
  • Amputees
  • Maintenance
  • Palliative care

How do I know if my pet needs physiotherapy?

As mentioned above, your pet may have a condition or have had a recent surgery, or they may have been referred by a vet. However, signs your pet may benefit from physio include:

  • Lameness/limping
  • Dragging or scuffing of paws
  • Wobbly gait
  • General stiffness
  • Difficulty getting up stairs/into the car
  • Muscle asymmetries or loss
  • Slowing on walks
  • Increased sleeping/lethargy
  • Inflammation or heat around joints
  • Behavioural issues/changes
  • Increased whining

What do I need to do before starting physiotherapy?

Before we can commence physiotherapy, I will need consent from your Vet. I will send you a form to fill out before our session which will include information about your veterinary practice. I will then be able to contact them directly, so its an easier process for you. If you wish to get this yourself, I can send that form over too.

Will my pet insurance cover physiotherapy?

The majority of pet insurance provides cover for physiotherapy. Please contact your provider to discuss this if it is something you wish to use. I am not able to do direct claims, so please provide me with your insurance form to claim on our sessions.

Can my nervous pet get physiotherapy?

I have gained plenty of experience with animals with different temperaments - I have worked with pregnant dogs, protection dogs, inpatients following surgery, reactive pets and police dogs, which all provide different and sometimes difficult temperaments and behaviours that I have had to adapt to. I am happy to work hard and patiently to treat your pet as best I can, approaching them all as individuals and treating them with space and respect. Being a mobile service helps with this aspect too, as treatment can be carried out in a familiar and comfortable environment for them, whilst also negating the need for any travel stress.

How many sessions will I need?

This is a commonly asked question, but is very dependent on the individual case and aims. It is often best to judge this session to session, and see how they are responding to their treatment and at-home exercises. Cases and clients will range from requiring just a few sessions to get back on track, to benefiting from maintenance sessions for life, and I am happy to guide and be flexible of your needs.

Do you only treat dogs?

Whilst I am specifically trained in canine and equine physiotherapy, all techniques can be transferred to any animal, and all species can benefit from physiotherapy sessions. I gained plenty of hands-on experience with a range of animals at University, including birds, reptiles, rodents and farm animals. So if you have any unusual requests, please feel free to enquire and I would be delighted to help!
